One of the reason for the high statistics in Nigeria is ultimately due to the fact that the prisons are being filled up faster than the dispensation of justice. Secondly, many inmates have either committed no crime at all or minor misdemeanor which ordinarily should be dealt with quickly once a lawyer is engaged. Invariably, some inmates spend more time in prison in excess of the maximum penalty stipulated for that crime.
Our mandate is to sieve out the most vulnerable – those arrested for minor misdemeanor and are awaiting trial- and find ways to secure their release and rehabilitation. Although a gradual process, it is anticipated that with time, we will spread our tentacles to every region.
