Anchor Heritage Initiative believes rehabilitation extends beyond vocational training, it also includes developing the mind. In partnership with Chess To School, we launched the Chess as a Correctional Tool Initiative, introducing structured chess education into Nigerian correctional facilities. The initiative first began at the Borstal Institution, Abeokuta, where inmates underwent an intensive 100-day chess training programme designed to strengthen critical thinking, discipline, patience, emotional intelligence, and decision-making. Building on this success, the programme was extended in January 2026 to the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre, where inmates received two months of intensive chess training. The impact quickly gained international recognition.
Following the training, Anchor Heritage Initiative and Chess To School successfully registered the participating inmates for the prestigious Chess for Freedom tournament; an online global competition organized for correctional facilities around the world.
History was made.
Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre became the first custodial center in Nigeria to participate in the Chess for Freedom competition. Competing against correctional institutions across Africa, the team achieved an outstanding 6th-place finish among 16 participating African custodial centers in their very first appearance.
This achievement demonstrated that when given the right opportunities, correctional inmates can compete, excel, and represent Nigeria with pride on the global stage.
