We believe that the most effective way to reduce recidivism is by equipping individuals with practical, income-generating skills before they return to society. Anchor Heritage Initiative has implemented vocational empowerment programmes across correctional facilities, providing inmates with hands-on training that prepares them for employment, entrepreneurship, and financial independence after release. One of our flagship empowerment initiatives has seen us train inmates in paint production and professional painting across 17 custodial centers in Nigeria. Beyond teaching the skill itself, inmates actively applied their training by repainting the walls and facilities within their custodial centers, creating cleaner, brighter, and more dignified environments while gaining valuable practical experience. Our commitment to empowerment also includes gender-responsive vocational training. At the Ilesa Custodial Centre, female inmates received specialized training in the production of reusable sanitary pads and interior decoration, equipping them with skills that address both social needs and economic opportunities. At the Agodi Custodial Center, male and female inmates underwent comprehensive bakery training before the establishment of the Agodi Custodial Centre Bakery Project, enabling them to develop professional baking skills while participating in productive work within the facility. Every empowerment programme is carefully designed to restore confidence, encourage self-reliance, and provide participants with practical tools that create sustainable livelihoods beyond incarceration.
